Shaffer-Anna_mediumWelcome to “Blog Back,” a new monthly column where the Living Beyond Breast Cancer staff  change up the LBBC Blog and write about their thoughts and experiences for you. Our September columnist is Anna Shaffer, our Editor and Manager, Web Content. Anna joined LBBC in 2005, and has seen the national nonprofit grow in many ways. In this edition of “Blog Back,” Anna writes about her experience collaborating with fellow staff and the board of directors to revise LBBC’s mission and vision statements.

A couple of months ago, I was privileged to participate in a board and staff retreat to brainstorm a new mission and vision statement for LBBC. It made me think not only about how much the organization has grown since I became part of the staff in 2005, but also about what drew me to work for LBBC in first place: our focus on providing the education and support a woman needs after she is diagnosed with breast cancer.

As an editor in LBBC’s publications department, I am responsible for producing content on a variety of medical and quality-of-life issues important to those affected by breast cancer. It is my job to ensure this content is clear, easy to understand, empathetic and accurate. All content—both print and online—undergoes a rigorous review process involving staff, healthcare providers and consumers. While our review process requires a considerable amount of time and effort, I believe it’s well worth it because it ensures that we consistently produce a high quality product.

When I write or edit content for our website, lbbc.org; for our quarterly newsletter, Insight; or for a guide to understanding breast cancer—whether the subject matter is sex and intimacy, healthcare reform, hormonal therapy, complementary treatments or clinical trials—I get a lot of satisfaction from “translating” highly technical content into everyday language that is approachable and easy to understand. Although I do find it intellectually stimulating, for me the greatest satisfaction comes from thinking about the women who will read it, relate to it and feel empowered to make the best decisions for their health and well-being.

“To connect people with trusted breast cancer information and a community of support.”

“A world where no one affected by breast cancer feels uninformed or alone.”

These are LBBC’s new mission and vision statements. To me, they further clarify and solidify our focus on providing education and support to those who need it, and I feel honored to contribute toward achieving them through the power of words and language.
