Nutrition to Prevent Colorectal Cancer: Antioxidants and Vitamin D
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Everything we eat passes through our colon, and the way that our bodies can cope with food can affect our cancer risks. By eating a healthy diet you can greatly reduce your colorectal cancer risks. Whilst there is some uncertainty about exactly how certain food types can reduce cancer risks, there is no doubt that a diet high in antioxidants, vitamins and fiber and low in fat, alongside regular exercise can greatly reduce every person’s cancer risks.
Antioxidants to Prevent Colorectal Cancer
By including high levels of antioxidants in your diet you can help to prevent a range of cancers, including colorectal cancer. Antioxidants boost the body’s natural defense system, helping to protect your body from free radicals, potentially cancer-causing substances.
Our cells produce free radicals as a by-product of oxygen use. Through oxidation (the same process that causes food to go off or metals to rust), free radicals can damage the body’s cells, potentially leading to heart disease, aging, cancer and infection.
Our bodies are naturally equipped to defend cells from free radicals but lifestyle and environmental elements, such as diet, smoking and everyday chemical exposure can increase oxidation, meaning that our bodies need additional help. Antioxidants like carotene, beta-carotene, lutein and selenium provide the body with additional support to neutralize free radicals.

Vitamins to Prevent Colorectal Cancer
Whilst the exact causes of colorectal cancer are unknown at this stage, there appears to be a link between vitamin D levels and the disease. Patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer tend to have lower levels of vitamin D than they should have. People with higher vitamin D levels are less likely to develop colorectal cancer but, if they do, they tend to have better outcomes than those with lower levels of the vitamin.
Every cell contains vitamin D receptors on its surface. These receptors pass on chemical signals that tell the cell to behave in a certain way, for example to multiply or to die. It is possible that vitamin D binds to the vitamin D receptors present in the colon and rectal cells and helps to tell abnormal or cancerous cells to die or not to divide. In this way, it is possible that vitamin D can assist in preventing cancer cells from growing and spreading.
Vitamin d can be found in food, such as oily fish and eggs, as well in sunlight. Healthy levels of vitamin D also help to boost our immune systems and maintain healthy bones.
