Medical Grade Facials... By: Robert Tostado MD Medical Microdermabrasion is one of the categories of medical grade facial treatments that involve dermal fillers and superficial skin peels. This treatment session is short, and requires you no time off work. It can be used alone or combined with other procedures meant to treat problems such as skin pigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines and acne. Discovered in Italy and a very popular procedure aesthetic around the world, this medical grade facial treatment involves a stream of fine medical grade crystals, usually of Aluminium oxide. The wand of the microdermabrasion machine is passed over the skin in gentle, stroking movements. Crystals are then directed onto the face and then vacuumed right away with the loosened skin particles. The movement of these crystals under pressure loosens and partially removes the outermost epidermal layer of the skin with a sandpaper effect. It helps improve the appearance of the skin and the circulation and generally gives the skin a healthy glow. All the waste goes into a separate, closed container to prevent the risk of contamination from dead skin products. The crystals are not re-used. Once the outer layer of skin has been removed, the layers of skin beneath then increase their production of new skin cells to renew the surface layer. This treatment gives a fresh appearance, an improved skin texture and reduced fine lines, brown age spots, and wrinkles. It can also be used to treat blackheads and whiteheads as well as improve acne-prone skin. Scars from acne or keloid and stretch marks also respond well to this treatment. Generally, this treatment is suitable for all skin types. One must remember though that the procedure is not advisable for deeper wrinkles and scars, deep hyperpigmentation problems, active skin problems like sores and for those who have taken isotretinoin within the last 12 months. Treatment usually takes around 10–30 minutes, but stretch marks can take much longer. For a maximum benefit, it is recommended that this procedure be repeated every week or so for a series of 5 to 10 sessions. Maintenance treatments can be scheduled every three or four months. |
