Botox for Hyperhidrosis... The celebrity secret for keeping cool for red carpet events. Underarms, palms, soles, and forehead are treated with Botox® to relieve excessive sweating for up to 12 months. About Hyperhidrosis a medical condition that causes excessive perspiration – more than the human body’s physiologica needs. Every day, our body perspires to maintain constant internal body temperature. Perspiration is balanced by what we call the sympathetic nervous system. This system controls millions of sweat glands in the body. Located within the chest cavity are the branches of the sympathetic chain that control sweating. Hyperhidrosis can be sudden or episodic or continuous. It can occur in the hands (palmer hyperhidrosis), armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis), feet (plantar hyperhidrosis), and face (facial hyperhidrosis). Hyperhidrosis has heavy effects on various aspects of one’s life – work, daily activities, professional activities, and social interactions. It often causes an individual to have a low self-esteem, feel distress and embarrassment. Having palmer hyperhidrosis, for instance, makes a person self-conscious since the hands are usually exposed during social and professional interactions or setting. This makes one avoid social contact or feel wary to shake hands or handle any work that can be affected by his sweaty hands. It can even be embarrassing to hold the hands of the one you love. More disturbing is having axillary hyperhidrosis, which is the excessive sweating in the armpits, leaving gross wet marks on shirts and can be a serious social problem. Sadly, this type of hyperhidrosis can limit the kind of clothing one can wear and can ruin some types of fabrics. Anyone with this condition has to avoid many colors and fabrics which could show the sweat marks. Another type is the plantar hyperhidrosis which is the excessive sweating of the feet and a known cause of foot odor and athlete’s feet – another embarrassing condition. Facial hyperhidrosis, on the other hand, refers to the sweating of the face. It may cause a person to be insecure and very anxious. Along with it, one could experience facial blushing, which is another embarrassing manifestation of the activity of the sympathetic nervous system. Axillary hyperhidrosis that does not respond to topical antiperspirants may be treated with BOTOX®™, which is an extract of botulinum toxin. The underarms, palms, soles and forehead may be treated. A test is done on your first visit. Iodine and then starch are applied to the site to determine exactly what areas need to be treated. Tiny injections are then administered to the site. Botox, when injected into areas of the skin that produce excess sweat, effectively reduces sweat production for many months. It paralyzes the tiny muscles that play an important role in sweat excretion. It is injected just under the skin in the hair bearing area of the axilla (armpit). When necessary, an anaesthetic cream can be applied. It usually takes 2 to 3 days for maximum effect. It can provide relief for as long as 9 months. The effect wears off gradually and the injection needs to be repeated to maintain the effect. |
